Albir is not just a quiet beach for strolling, swimming, and enjoying a drink by the sea. If you look closely, it’s also a great starting point for kayaking, snorkeling, paddle surfing, diving, recreational fishing, and boat trips around the Serra Gelada mountain range.
However, it’s important to know which activities actually depart from Albir Beach and which operate from the port of Altea , because many websites mix both areas as if they were the same.

The playing field: Albir Beach and the Serra Gelada
Albir Beach, also known as Racó de l’Albir, is the starting point for almost all water activities in the area.
It’s a Blue Flag beach, with clean water, pebbles — wear water shoes, seriously — and a marked area for boat launches.
Municipal lifeguards provide service from June 1st to September 30th:

Right next to the beach begins the Serra Gelada Natural Park, the first marine-terrestrial park in the Valencian Community. And this is important: around 88% of its protected area is marine.
We’re not just talking about beautiful cliffs from land. Underwater, there are Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, rocky seabeds, submerged caves, and marine life far more interesting than many visitors imagine.
There are rules that matter: anchoring must be done only in ecological buoys, the maximum speed in protected areas is 3 knots, and authorization is required to scuba dive in certain areas.
It’s not useless bureaucracy. It’s what keeps this seabed alive.
Snorkeling in El Albir: free, no boat required, and better than it looks.
Snorkeling is one of the most underrated activities in El Albir.
Most people don’t see it advertised, don’t ask, and miss out. But if you know where to go in the water, the experience is completely different.
Snorkeling from Albir Beach
The best spot is in the southern corner of the beach, where the pebbles begin to mix with the rocky area.
There you can see sea bream, damselfish, saddled seabream, some octopus and quite a lot of small Mediterranean bottom life.
It is an area suitable for children, always with calm seas and normal surveillance.
Snorkeling in Amerador Cove
Cala del Amerador is one of the best options for snorkeling near El Albir without too much hassle.
It’s the most accessible cove. You can reach it via a short path from the lighthouse route or in about 5 minutes by kayak from the beach.
It usually has good visibility and more wildlife than the main bathing area.
Snorkeling in Cala del Metge and Cala de la Mina
Cala del Metge and Cala de la Mina are already demanding more.
Access is more difficult: a stony path or arriving by sea along the Serra Gelada. But the reward is well worth the effort.
With luck you might see groupers, moray eels, rays, starfish, sea bass, blennies and other Mediterranean fish.
Posidonia seagrass meadows support much of this marine life. Don’t step on them, don’t pull them up, and don’t treat them like they’re just unimportant seaweed.

The best time is usually from June to October.
In August, the water temperature can reach around 27°C. May and September are particularly interesting months because there are fewer people and visibility can still be very good.

The meeting point is usually the anchor sculpture, at the beginning of the seafront promenade.

The City Council has been organizing free kayak trips on Tuesdays in July and August for fifteen years.

If the easterly wind is blowing, it’s usually cancelled. The water gets murky, visibility drops, and the trip becomes pointless.

The bay of El Albir is quite protected and its waters are usually calm.
It’s not an area with strong winds, and that’s an advantage for paddle surfing.
The rental takes place at the same location as the kayak, next to the beach library.

Pedals on Albir Beach
Pedal boats are also available in the beach library area, with Hamacas Playa Albir.
They operate on the same schedule.
It is the most peaceful option for families with small children or for anyone who wants to go out on the water for a while without technical effort.
It’s only worth it when the sea is calm.
Diving in El Albir: the local center is Scorpora
For diving in El Albir there is one clear name: Scorpora Diving Center.
It is located at Pau Casals street 6, behind the Hotel Kaktus, less than a minute from the beach.
They have been around since 1995 and are approved by the Valencian Government.

This is the fact that many websites don’t explain well: boat trips depart from the port of Altea, about 10 minutes away by car.
Albir has no port.
The most reviewed option is Marinalia.
It offers a 3-hour excursion through the Serra Gelada, with a snorkeling stop guided by a marine biologist, snorkeling equipment and SUP on board.
Approximate price: €40.
Capacity: 12 people.
Departure from the Altea Nautical Club, with possible pick-up in El Albir.
The points of the route change depending on the state of the sea and may include Illa Mitjana, La Pileta, Isla de Benidorm or Mascarat.
Sea Experience Albir, Evasion Nautica and Albir Marina have “Albir” in their name, but operate from Altea.

To fish from the coast you need the recreational sea fishing license from the Generalitat Valenciana.
It’s free, you can apply online, and it doesn’t require an exam.
Maximum allowed: two rods.
In summer, from June to September, the municipal ordinance only allows fishing from the beach between 9:00 PM and 9:00 AM, and only when there are no other users present.
Outside of peak season, there are no time restrictions.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing: Albir is not the best place
To put it bluntly: Albir is not a good area for serious kitesurfing or windsurfing.
The bay is protected by Punta Bombarda and Serra Gelada, the waters are sheltered and the winds are usually light.
There is no kitesurfing school based in El Albir.
For getting started in paddle surfing or doing some quiet sailing activity, it can make sense.
For serious kitesurfing or windsurfing, there are better areas on the Costa Blanca.
The easterly wind: the variable that many guides don’t mention
When the Levante wind blows strongly from the east, the water becomes murky.
Visibility for snorkeling drops significantly and kayak trips to the coves are often cancelled.
During those days, the main beach may still be an option for swimming.
But the coves lose a lot of their charm.
The best thing to do is postpone the plan by one day.
