This guide offers a full overview of the resources available for residents, Spanish pensioners and foreign retirees who want to enjoy an active, healthy and accessible stay.

ToggleTHE IMSERSO PROGRAMME IN EL ALBIR
WHAT IS IMSERSO AND WHO CAN ACCESS IT
The Instituto de Mayores y Servicios Sociales (IMSERSO) offers subsidised trips each season aimed at pensioners, people aged 65 and over, and widows or widowers aged 55 and over. These trips are designed to promote active ageing, combat unwanted loneliness and maintain the dynamism of the tourism sector in the low season. They also allow thousands of people to enjoy affordable stays with adapted services at participating hotels along the Costa Blanca, including establishments in El Albir.
Applications are submitted annually, usually between April and June. They can be completed online via the IMSERSO website or in person at Social Services offices. Places are allocated by lottery based on the number of applicants.
THE VIAJA +65 PROGRAMME (VALENCIAN COMMUNITY)
Beyond IMSERSO, the Valencian regional government launched the Viaja +65 programme, open to all residents of the Comunitat Valenciana aged 65 or over. There is no requirement to be retired or receiving a pension. The initiative aims to democratise access to tourism for older people, offering discounts for stays of 2 to 5 nights at establishments across the region.
ALTERNATIVES FOR FOREIGN RESIDENTS AND EXPATS
Travel agencies such as Mundosenior Plus or El Corte Inglés offer packages tailored for the over-55s without the need to meet IMSERSO requirements. Many of these use the same hotels, operate at quieter times of day and offer similar services. They are very popular among European expats living on the Costa Blanca.
THE GRAN ALACANT RESORT IN L’ALFÀS DEL PI
This residential complex located in L’Alfàs del Pi is one of the largest of its kind in Spain, with a strong focus on senior wellbeing. It offers a wide range of health and leisure services, therapeutic pools, sports facilities and a social programme that has become a model for active retirement communities in Spain. It is particularly well-regarded among northern European residents.
HEALTHCARE FOR SENIORS IN EL ALBIR
The area has a well-developed network of public and private health resources suited to senior residents and visitors. In addition to the local health centre and referral hospital in La Vila Joiosa, clinics such as HCB Albir and IMED offer multilingual, specialist care for international tourism, compatible with European health insurance cards and private policies.

SOCIO-CULTURAL WEEK AND WORKSHOPS
Each spring, the Semana del Mayor (Senior Week) is held, with free workshops, talks, excursions and cultural events. Throughout the rest of the year, the El Albir Social Centre offers memory classes, cognitive stimulation, gentle gymnastics, dance, painting, healthy cooking and music therapy, among others. Participation is free and open to both Spanish and foreign residents.
MEDICAL EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION
L’Alfàs del Pi was a pioneer in prescribing exercise through health centres as part of primary care. Doctors refer patients to municipal workshops, supporting the adoption of healthy habits. This institutional coordination has been recognised as a best practice by European public health bodies and has contributed to the town’s international reputation as a reference destination for healthy ageing.
