El Nàutic de l’Albir belongs a little to both camps, but if I’m honest, what weighs most on its reputation is the second one: it sits right on the beachfront, in the middle of the Paseo de las Estrellas, with the sand practically brushing the terrace. I’ve lived in El Albir for almost twenty years and I’ve eaten here a handful of times over that period, with mixed results. If I had to sum up what you’ll find in a single word, it would be “uneven”, though the location makes up for a good part of that inconsistency.

In this article I want to tell you what the data and the reviews really say about this place, not just the pretty seaside postcard version you see in the photos. I’ve gone through Google, Tripadvisor, TheFork and several restaurant aggregators, and I’ve also spent time on the negative reviews, which in this particular case deserve a fair bit of attention before you book a table.

the seafront promenade that gives the street its name. If you don’t know the area, it’s the same pedestrian strip, with bronze stars set into the ground in honor of people linked to the film world, that runs along the whole seafront of Albir beach.

The restaurant has an outdoor terrace with direct sea views and an air-conditioned dining room, decorated in a nautical style that some people find very cozy and others find a bit impersonal. Worth knowing: the promenade itself is currently being renovated and pedestrianized, a project funded with European money that started in early 2025 and includes a new bike lane, LED lighting and accessible restrooms. So if you go in the coming months, you may find part of the immediate surroundings fenced off or with machinery around, which is worth keeping in mind before you make plans.

In the same building, right next door, is Goleta Beach, a café-bar-grill with a different concept (burgers, quesadillas, cocktails, sports on the screens). They’re neighboring businesses that share a postal address but, as far as I’ve been able to check, they run independently, with separate phone numbers and management. I mention it because it’s easy to mix them up if you search by address instead of by name.

The menu: rice dishes, fish and a bit of everything

El Nàutic’s food revolves around the sea, as the name suggests: rice dishes, paellas, fish and seafood, with a clearly Mediterranean and Valencian stamp. On top of that there’s an all-day bar and café service, with coffees, cocktails, tapas, burgers and sandwiches, designed to cover both a proper sit-down meal and that mid-afternoon break on the terrace.

Among the rice dishes, which are the real heart of the menu, the ones mentioned most often in customer reviews are the arroz del señoret, the arroz a banda, the brothy rice with monkfish and prawns or langoustines, the brothy lobster rice, the black rice (arroz negro), the seafood paella and also a vegetable paella for anyone who’d rather avoid fish and meat. There’s fideuá too. As at most rice restaurants around here, these dishes usually come with a two-person minimum per order, so it’s not the best option if you’re eating on your own.

For starters, the menu offers steamed mussels, fried baby cuttlefish (chopitos or sepionet), fried calamari, garlic prawns, grilled cuttlefish, homemade croquettes, Galician-style or grilled octopus, Russian potato salad and goat cheese salad. For dessert, some customers single out the cheesecake, the chocolate cake, the classic blanco y negro and the lemon sorbet.

As for prices, there’s quite a bit of variety depending on the source: there’s a set menu cited in several reviews at around €20, “pretty complete, drinks included”, and also scattered references to prices between €15 and €19 for certain dishes in occasional promotions from local businesses. A real sample bill, for a full meal for two with starters, a rice dish, desserts and wine, comes to around €95, which puts the average spend at around €25 per person, a reasonable figure for a beachfront restaurant, although some reviews say the value for money doesn’t always live up to that number.

Prices are approximate as of the date of publication. Always check the current menu directly with the restaurant before you go, especially if you’re planning to order a rice dish for a large group.

What the platforms say: this is where you should temper your expectations

If the Caminito article surprised you with how consistently good its ratings were across every platform, this case is the exact opposite: El Nàutic’s scores are a lot more modest and, above all, all over the place from one platform to another, which in itself is already a relevant piece of data.

On Tripadvisor, the restaurant has a rating of 3.3 out of 5 from 173 reviews, which puts it at number 92 out of 134 restaurants in El Albir. It has no Travellers’ Choice badge or Certificate of Excellence. That’s clearly a middling-to-low score within the village’s offering, a long way from the top 10 where other nearby rice restaurants sit.

On Google, the picture improves quite a bit: we’re talking about a listing with several hundred reviews (estimates vary depending on the aggregator, from 570 to more than 800) and a score clearly above its Tripadvisor one, although one review aggregator describes it word for word as “below average on Google” compared with other businesses in its category. The combined reputation across several review sites (Google included) puts the overall score at around 6.6 out of 10.

The restaurant also has a listing on TheFork/ElTenedor, though with a modest commercial presence, without the volume of reviews or the activity of other rice restaurants in the area that do stand out on that platform, with scores of 8 or 9 out of 10.

The honest conclusion is that, as of today, El Nàutic is not one of the best-rated restaurants in El Albir according to the objective data, though it isn’t a bad restaurant either: it’s a place with an exceptional location and food that most customers describe as decent, sprinkled with some clearly negative experiences that are worth knowing about before you book.

What people really appreciate

Despite the average scores, some customers talk about El Nàutic with real affection, and that’s worth including. Several Google reviews single out the dining room staff by name, which, as at other restaurants in the area, is usually a good sign of genuine customer loyalty: “the terrace is super pleasant with sea views, the service is impeccable”; “it’s our go-to place, we always come when we spend a few days of rest here… excellent service, the quality of the food is great, the views are incredible”; “we had an arroz al señoret, spectacular… the service was exquisite”.

On Tripadvisor, some of the best reviews focus specifically on the brothy rice dishes: “the prawn and monkfish rice in caldereta is exquisite. Good range of starters and salads. Very good price”; “the best rice I’ve had in my life… a spectacular arroz a banda, excellent sepionet and calamari starters”. For large groups there are also positive experiences: a review from four families, sixteen people in total, describes “the service we got was great” and several kinds of rice that were “spectacular, cooked just right”.

What doesn’t always go well: this is where I have to be especially honest

If in the Caminito article the negative comments were just nuances within a very favorable overall picture, here the weight of the negative reviews is noticeably greater, and I don’t think it would be fair to you if I softened them.

The problem that comes up most insistently, and most seriously, is the burnt paella. It’s not an isolated complaint: it shows up in several independent reviews, in different languages, which suggests it isn’t a one-off incident but a failure that has happened more than once over time. One Spanish-language review puts it like this: “they burned the paella. Something that has never happened to me anywhere in the whole Valencian Community… we had to wait almost another hour for the new one to come out. They take too long to make it”. An English-language review describes a much more serious experience: they ordered a chicken paella and, after the first bite, none of the diners could keep eating because the bottom of the dish was completely black and burnt; even so, they were charged almost €40 for a dish that, in their view, should never have left the kitchen, and when they complained, the staff’s attitude turned, in their words, aggressive. Another review, this one translated from Norwegian, describes a similar experience (rice stuck to the bottom of the pan, tasting of burnt) and adds that the staff didn’t agree with the complaint and suddenly only spoke Spanish, offering no compensation or discount.

Beyond the paella, there are recurring complaints about slow service, especially in high season: “the staff were friendly and helpful, but at times there weren’t enough of them and the service was slower than we would have liked”. Some reviews describe waits of almost an hour, dishes arriving without the sauces that go with them, and a bit of tension when paying by card. There are also reviews that say the experience is the typical “beach restaurant for foreign tourists”, with overcooked mussels and starters that didn’t all arrive as ordered.

On price, one English-language review sums up a feeling shared by several customers: decent food but expensive for what it offers, to the point that after spending around €20 per person they were still hungry and decided to go somewhere else afterward.

So what do I conclude from all this, being as honest as I can? That El Nàutic isn’t a restaurant you can book blindly expecting a perfect experience every time. The location is a real asset and hard to match in the village, and there are repeat customers who keep coming back because the service and the rice have consistently worked well for them. But the pattern of complaints about burnt paella is repeated enough that, if you decide to go, it shouldn’t surprise you to check the rice as soon as it’s served, or to manage your expectations about waiting times on weekends or in high season.

History and who runs it

Here I have to be upfront about the limits of what I’ve been able to confirm. The place has a track record at the same location, but at least one regular customer mentions in their review that it “used to” operate “under a different name”, which suggests a change of brand or management at some point that I can’t pin down. There’s also mention of a new cook, from Granada and based in Altea, in charge of the rice dishes, and several waitresses are named in recent reviews, a sign that there’s dining room staff with some continuity. I haven’t been able to confirm the exact year the business opened or the name of the current owner, so if that information matters to you, the most reliable thing is to ask at the restaurant directly.

I haven’t found any meaningful coverage in the specialist local press dedicated specifically to this restaurant, unlike some other businesses in the area that have received in-depth features in English-language media.

How it compares with other restaurants in the area

Within the category of rice restaurants and quality Mediterranean cooking in El Albir, El Nàutic has one competitor that is clearly better rated on the numbers: Único Restaurante & Arrocería, with a markedly higher score on both Google and Tripadvisor, and Casa Enrique, another local reference for rice dishes and fresh fish. If what you’re after is specifically the best value for money on rice dishes in the village, those two options should be on your list before El Nàutic, based on the data available today.

Where El Nàutic does compete from a position of strength is in its most immediate segment: the beachfront places along the Paseo de las Estrellas, like Goleta Beach (next door, but a different concept), Country Ribs or Casa Teo. There its edge is clear: no other restaurant on that particular stretch of the promenade has a terrace so close to the sand or a menu so focused on traditional rice.

If you’d rather have a grill or a meat-focused place instead of seafood, La Estancia and Restaurante Enrique are the most solid references in the village on that front, both with better average ratings than El Nàutic on the platforms I checked.

Social media presence

El Nàutic has a Facebook page with nearly a thousand “likes” and almost nine hundred people marked as having “been here”, with the tagline “Specialists in Mediterranean food: paellas, rice dishes and tapas by the sea on Albir Beach”. Recent activity on that page is sparse, with the most visible post dated quite a while back. It’s simply a business that doesn’t put much effort into its digital communication, which is quite common among beach restaurants that depend more on direct foot traffic than on online promotion.

Practical information

Address: Passeig de les Estreles / Paseo de las Estrellas, 1 (Playamar building), 03581 L’Albir, Alfàs del Pi, Alicante

Phone: 966 86 57 87

Opening hours: the sources don’t fully agree; some say open daily from 10:00 to 23:00 or from 12:30 to 00:00, others say continuous hours until midnight every day. Where you’ll want to be a bit more careful is with the traditional dry paellas, given the repeated pattern of complaints about how they’re cooked, and with the more “international” dishes on the bar menu, such as the burgers, which some reviews describe as lackluster.

One practical tip that comes up in several reviews: if you go in high season, try to go at off-peak times, early or late, to avoid both the crowds and the peak of pressure in the kitchen that seems to be behind a good share of the complaints about quality and waiting times.

Frequently asked questions about El Nàutic

Do you need to book? It’s not essential on weekdays or out of season, but it’s highly recommended in summer and on weekends, especially if you plan to order a rice dish, because it needs a minimum preparation time and the place fills up quickly when the weather is good.

Is it a good option with kids? The beachfront location makes it convenient for families, with the added bonus that the children can play in the sand while the food is being prepared. The sooner it’s spotted, the easier it is for the restaurant to fix it without any friction.

Is it worth going just for the views, even if it isn’t the best rice in town? It depends on what you’re after that evening. If you want a high-level dining experience, there are better-rated options in the village. If what you want is a relaxed afternoon with your feet almost in the sand and you don’t mind putting up with some variability in the kitchen, the location alone can justify the visit.

Are there vegetarian options? Yes, the vegetable paella is the main option for anyone who doesn’t eat fish or meat, along with salads and some tapas from the bar menu.

The Paseo de las Estrellas and the best time to go

Beyond the restaurant itself, it’s worth taking a moment to talk about the setting, because it’s part of the experience. The Paseo de las Estrellas is the pedestrian strip that runs along the seafront of the beach, with bronze plaques dedicated to figures from the world of cinema, a nod that gives the place a different feel from an ordinary promenade. Sitting on El Nàutic’s terrace at midday, with the sun beating down on the Mediterranean, or at sunset, when the light starts to drop over the Serra Gelada in the background, are two quite different experiences, and both have their defenders among the regulars.

Keep in mind, as I mentioned earlier, that the promenade has been under renovation since early 2025, with a planned timeframe of several months and an investment of over €560,000 coming from European funds. The project includes a new bike lane, renewed LED lighting and accessible public restrooms, as part of a municipal universal-accessibility plan for the whole seafront. If you’re visiting the area in the coming months, it’s reasonable to expect to find part of the restaurant’s immediate surroundings with construction fencing or machinery, something that normally doesn’t affect the restaurant’s own service but can affect the stroll before or after your meal.

Other options if you’re after something different

If after reading all this you’d rather explore other alternatives in the same beach area, along the promenade you have Casa Teo, Country Ribs and No-Mad, each with a different approach from traditional seafood cooking. Eating with the sand a step away and the Mediterranean as a backdrop has real value, and there are loyal customers who keep coming back because the service and the rice have worked well for them time and again. But the objective data (a 3.3 out of 5 on Tripadvisor and 92nd place out of 134 restaurants in El Albir) and the repeated pattern of complaints about burnt paellas are not a minor detail you can wave away just because the views make up for it.

My honest advice is this: if your priority is sitting with your feet almost in the sand and enjoying the atmosphere, without the quality of the food being what matters most, El Nàutic can give you a perfectly pleasant afternoon, especially if you order one of the best-rated brothy rice dishes. But if your priority is to pick the best rice restaurant in the village, there are options with better numbers and fewer recurring complaints, and they’re worth considering before you decide.

If you asked me how I’d handle it on an ordinary day in El Albir with guests visiting from out of town, I’d say it depends on the kind of guest. For someone who values the setting above all (the sea a meter away, the sound of the waves in the background, the feeling of being on vacation even if it’s only for an hour-long meal), El Nàutic does its job perfectly, and they’ll probably take home a good memory of the afternoon. For someone who puts rice technique above everything and would notice right away if the base of a paella has been left on the heat too long, I’d rather take them somewhere else and save El Nàutic for a sunset drink instead of the main meal.

In any case, and this goes for any beach restaurant in high season, the experience depends quite a lot on the day and the time you go. An August midday with a full terrace isn’t the same as a quiet weekday afternoon in May, and a good share of the complaints I’ve gathered for this article seem to be concentrated precisely in those moments of maximum pressure on the kitchen and the dining room.

To get a wider sense of what other places there are in the village, you can keep browsing where to eat in El Albir until you find the one that best fits what you’re after that evening.
