But there is another Albir that most visitors never even suspect: the one that begins right where the shoreline ends. Just a few metres from the beach, below the waterline, lies one of the most interesting seabeds on the whole Costa Blanca, protected within a marine natural park and surprisingly full of life for a spot right next to such a touristy area.

This article is for anyone considering putting their head under the water in El Albir: from those who have never dived and wonder whether it is possible here, to those who already hold a certification and want to know what you can see, where you dive and with whom. Let’s take it step by step, without rushing and without overselling.
<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_88 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-grey class="font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal" dir="ltr" data-sourcepos="9:1-9:223;812-1034">Yes, you can dive in El Albir, and what’s more, it takes place in a top-tier protected environment. That said, it helps to understand how the logistics work, because it isn’t quite like a destination with a big marina.

El Albir has no harbour of its own. The beach is an open bay, with no dock or piers, so boat dives don’t set off from a village quay as someone arriving from outside might imagine. What El Albir does have is a dive centre right on the beachfront, and from here trips are organised to the best dive sites in the area, which are spread across the waters of Altea, the Serra Gelada itself and Benidorm.

This has a positive side and one you should be clear about. The positive: the seabeds along this stretch of coast are among the richest on the Alicante coastline, with the added advantage of lying within a protected natural area that has halted the deterioration suffered elsewhere. The one you have to accept: most of the interesting diving is done from a boat, towards the islets and the walls of the sierra, rather than as an easy entry from the sand. For snorkelling and first taster experiences, shore entry works very well, especially in the coves, but to really go down with a tank the usual approach is to reach the dive sites by boat.

In short: El Albir is an excellent base for diving, with a local centre that takes care of the equipment, training and transfer for you, and with a marine environment that more than justifies the effort of getting organised.

The Serra Gelada Natural Park: the big reason to dive here

Everything that makes diving in El Albir special has a name: the Serra Gelada. The range that closes the bay to the south and ends at the El Albir lighthouse is not just a pretty backdrop for photos; it is a natural park that protects both the mountain and a broad strip of sea, and it is that sea you dive in.

The park covers more than 5,500 hectares, and most of that area is marine. Within its boundaries it protects the whole of the sierra and several emblematic islets: the Illot de la Mitjana, the Illot de Benidorm and the Illots de l’Olla and la Galera. These islets, with walls that drop sheer beneath the water, are true paradises for snorkelling and scuba diving, and they account for a large share of the dives done across the whole region.

The name “Sierra Helada” (“Frozen Range”) has nothing to do with the cold, although it might seem so. It is due partly to the orientation of the sierra, which creates a slightly cooler microclimate on its north face, and partly to a curious optical effect: the white light produced by the moon reflected on the limestone walls, which look frosted at night. That same limestone that gives the place its name is what, underwater, forms the vertical walls and nooks where life takes refuge.

Underwater, what dominates the landscape are the meadows of Posidonia oceanica, the Mediterranean’s endemic plant that carpets the sandy seabeds. Posidonia is not an alga but a flowering plant with roots, and its presence is the best sign that the water is healthy: it acts as a nursery for countless species, oxygenates the water, stabilises the seabed and curbs beach erosion. In the Serra Gelada these meadows are in a very good state of conservation, which is exceptional considering how intensely touristy this coast is. Alongside the posidonia there are also communities of Cymodocea and vermetids, equally important for the health of the ecosystem.

And then there are the walls. Where the rock drops vertically at the foot of the cliffs, the limestone is covered in red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) and deep-water anemones, creating those ledges and caves that experienced divers love. This combination of meadow and wall is what makes the area one of the sites of greatest interest for diving along the whole Alicante coast, with visibility that on calm days can exceed twenty metres.

What you will see underwater

One of the questions most often asked by people who have never dived is whether there is “really anything to see” in the Mediterranean, or whether that only happens in tropical seas. In the Serra Gelada the answer is clear: there is life, and plenty of it, precisely thanks to the protection the park provides.

Over the posidonia meadows it is easy to find salema porgy grazing in groups, with that silvery look and those golden glints on their flanks. They are among the most recognisable fish in the Mediterranean and usually move in shoals, nibbling at the plant’s leaves. Nearby you will spot damselfish (castañuelas), those small dark fish that form clouds over the rocks and retreat into holes at the slightest movement. And patrolling the rocky drop-offs are the white seabream (sargos), which look for the shade of the ledges and stone shelves.

In the nooks of the rock, among the holes and cracks left by the limestone platforms, octopuses hide, masters of camouflage that you have to learn to look at slowly to spot. The rock is also carpeted with small brown and reddish algae, and with the showy Padina pavonica, a fan-shaped alga whose presence, like that of posidonia, indicates that these seabeds are in good health.

Among the most valuable species in the park is the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis), the largest bivalve mollusc in the Mediterranean, which can embed itself in the sand among the posidonia beds. It is a species threatened across the whole sea, so seeing one is a small privilege and, of course, you never touch it.

And then there is the extra that doesn’t even need a tank. These waters are the territory of bottlenose dolphins, which show themselves with relative frequency off the coast of the Serra Gelada. It’s not something that can be guaranteed on every trip, but anyone who spends time at sea here knows that sightings do happen, and that seeing a pod crossing the bay is one of those moments that stay with you.

Above the water, the richness is also remarkable: the cliffs and islets of the park serve as a refuge for seabirds, with the European shag as the star species, as well as gulls, the European storm petrel and even birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon. It is not unusual for one of these birds to fly over you while you wait your turn on the boat before a dive.

Dive sites in the El Albir area

Here is where it pays to be honest: the main dive sites are not literally in front of El Albir beach, but spread across the marine strip of the Serra Gelada and its surroundings, towards Altea on one side and Benidorm on the other. The local centre takes you to them by boat, and picks the site according to the time of year, the state of the sea and your level. These are the most common ones.

Els Illots de l’Olla (Altea). The underwater extension of L’Olla, off Altea, is part of the protected area of the Serra Gelada and is one of the most rewarding spots for beginners, both for snorkelling and diving. The drop-off of the rock platform falls from about three metres to about six, full of nooks and holes that shelter small octopuses, and of ledges that shade the groups of white seabream. It is a bright area, with posidonia, damselfish and that Padina pavonica that betrays the quality of the seabed. Ideal for taster dives and first dives.

The Illot de la Mitjana. One of the park’s protected islets and one of the sites the El Albir centre visits most regularly. The walls of the islets make for some of the most complete dives in the area, with rock colonised by life and that feeling of diving “along a wall” that people love so much.

The Illot de Benidorm (L’Illa de Benidorm). Benidorm Island is a classic of the region’s diving. Along with La Llosa, it is one of the favourite destinations for September and October outings, when the sea usually offers its best temperature and visibility conditions after the summer. It is a different type of dive, more about rock architecture, which adds variety for those who have already dived the walls and meadows.

La Pileta. Another of the sites that recur in the area’s dive calendar, in the same vein of rocky, life-rich seabeds typical of this stretch of coast.

The coves of El Albir. For snorkelling and shore-based first experiences, the three coves of the Serra Gelada—Cala del Metge, Cala de la Mina and Cala del Amerador—are a great plan. If you want the detail on each one, it is set out on the page dedicated to the coves of El Albir.

As a general rule, the best seabeds are found in the rocky areas at the foot of the cliffs, where the posidonia meadow and the walls with gorgonians offer the greatest biodiversity. You reach them by swimming from the coves or by boat, always respecting the marine buoyage and never anchoring over the posidonia.

The El Albir dive centre

In El Albir, right on the beachfront, there is a long-established dive centre: Scórpora. It is the local reference for anyone who wants to dive here, and it is at Calle Pau Casals, number 6, in the El Albir beach area, right behind the Hotel Kaktus. It has been running for many years and has trained a great number of divers over time, which makes it a solid option both for beginners and for those who already have experience.

A couple of details define the way they work and are worth knowing before you book. The first: taster dives are done in the sea, not in a pool. Many centres do the first contact in a heated pool; here the philosophy is different, and your first breath underwater is already in the Mediterranean, in shallow open water, with the instructor beside you. For many people that is precisely what they are looking for, because the experience is real from the very first minute. The second: they have their own boat, a spacious vessel of about eleven metres in length, with a stern platform for getting in and out of the water comfortably, tank racks, an awning and plenty of room to kit up lying down during the trip to the dive site. That makes the transfers to the islets feel like outings rather than an ordeal, even if there is some swell.

The centre works with internationally recognised certifications and organises courses at all levels throughout the year, from the taster dive to the most advanced specialities. That said, in winter the trips tend to be concentrated at weekends, which is logical considering the daylight hours and sea conditions at that time of year.

It is worth adding one nuance to be fair to the whole picture: Scórpora is the centre physically located in El Albir, but it is not the only one that dives these waters. The same islets and walls of the Serra Gelada are also worked from centres in Altea, Benidorm and Calpe, because the park is a destination shared by all of them. If at some point you are looking for a very specific type of dive or fixed dates that don’t fit with the local centre, you have alternatives a few minutes away. That said, for most people who stay or live in El Albir, having the centre right on the beachfront is a huge convenience.

What your first dive is like

If you have never dived, what you will probably do is a taster dive, also called a trial dive. It is the way to find out whether this hooks you without committing to a full course, and it requires no certification or previous experience.

The day begins on land, with a short theory talk. It is not a dense lesson: it is the essentials so that you understand how the equipment works, how to breathe underwater, how to equalise your ears as you descend and what signals you will use to communicate, because you can’t talk underwater. The instructor also explains the basic precautions before, during and after the dive, and this is where you notice the difference between a centre that takes its time and one that is in a hurry.

Then you are fully kitted out. On a taster dive you don’t need to bring anything more than your swimsuit and a towel; the wetsuit, tanks, jacket, regulator, fins and mask are provided by the centre. With everything on, you enter the water, normally in a calm, shallow area, and then comes the key moment: the first breath with your head submerged. It sounds odd to explain, but breathing underwater for the first time is a sensation you never forget.

From there, always with the instructor right next to you and keeping an eye on everything, you begin to move slowly, look at the seabed, notice the fish. There is nothing complicated to do: the idea is that you enjoy yourself and find out whether you feel like continuing. At the end, on the boat or on the shore, what was seen on that particular outing is usually discussed, which is one of the best parts: comparing impressions and putting names to the fish you came across.

Courses and levels: from zero to autonomous diver

If the taster dive hooks you—and it usually does—the next step is to get a certification that lets you dive as an autonomous diver. The pathway, broadly speaking, is this.

The first full course is the entry level, the one that certifies you as an autonomous diver down to a limited depth (usually around 18 metres). It combines theory, practice sessions in confined or shallow water and several open-water dives. One advantage of current training is that a good part of the theory can be studied online, at your own pace, so you can arrive at the centre with the homework done and spend the in-person time in the water. This course is your “licence” to start diving around the world.

The next step up is the advanced level, which extends the depth you can descend to (around 30 metres depending on the certification) and introduces different types of dive: underwater navigation, deep diving, boat diving, night diving, and so on. It is the step that truly opens up the range of dive sites, because many of the most beautiful spots in the Serra Gelada are better enjoyed with a bit more experience and depth.

From there come the specialities and professional levels: first aid, deep diving, navigation, Nitrox (enriched air), equipment techniques, drysuit diving and a long list of others, up to, if you take it seriously, the guide and instructor qualifications. And for those who don’t want scuba equipment for the moment, there is also the option of guided snorkelling, with specific training on how to move and observe the seabed from the surface.

Indicative diving prices in El Albir

An important clarification up front: the prices that follow are indicative market figures, not a fixed official rate. The local centre does not publish an open price list, and rates change depending on the season, whether you need to hire full equipment, the number of dives you book and occasional promotions. The sensible thing is to ask for a quote directly before booking. With that caveat in mind, these are the orders of magnitude used on the Costa Blanca to give you an idea.

A taster dive tends to fall, roughly, within a range that at many centres in the area is between 60 and 100 euros, depending on whether it includes the boat, photos or the number of dives. A full entry-level course, with equipment, comes to approximately between 350 and 450 euros, again depending on what it includes. Single dives for already-certified divers work out better value when booked in multi-dive packs than one at a time, and there the equipment hire is added on top if you don’t bring your own.

I insist on the caveat because it is a house rule on this website: all these amounts are approximate and you should confirm them with the centre. They are for budgeting, not a guaranteed price.

Best season, water temperature and conditions

Diving in El Albir can be done all year round, but not all seasons are equal, and choosing well makes the difference between a mediocre dive and an excellent one.

The Mediterranean water here is warm in summer and cool in winter. As a guide, in the height of summer the surface temperature can be around 25 or 26 degrees, while in the depths of winter it can drop to approximately 14 degrees. This affects the wetsuit you will need: in summer a thinner suit is enough, while out of season thicker suits are used, semi-dry or even dry suits for those who dive frequently. The centre adjusts all of this for you depending on the date.

For many divers in the area, the best time of year is not the peak of summer but the end of it: September and October, when the water retains the accumulated heat, the sea is usually calm and visibility reaches its best levels. It is no coincidence that the star sites such as La Llosa and Benidorm Island are precisely the preferred destinations for those months.

Visibility, that factor that matters so much underwater, depends a lot on the state of the sea. On calm days it can exceed twenty metres, which is notable for the Mediterranean; after a storm or with a groundswell, it drops considerably. That is why the dive site is often decided on the same day, depending on how the sea is and where the wind is blowing from. It is normal, and it is a good sign: it means the aim is the best possible experience on each trip rather than always going to the same place out of habit.

In winter, as we said, trips are concentrated at weekends. If you come in the low season with the idea of diving, it is best to book in advance and be somewhat flexible with dates.

Diving in a protected area: do it with care

Diving in the Serra Gelada is a privilege precisely because it is a protected area, and that privilege comes with a responsibility. Everything you see down there is in good condition because there are rules, and because people respect them.

The golden rule is don’t touch and don’t take anything. No collecting shells or pen shells, no bothering octopuses, no uprooting posidonia. Posidonia, in particular, is sacred: it grows extremely slowly—we are talking centuries to form a meadow—and you never anchor on it. Divers with good buoyancy control also avoid brushing the seabed with their fins, because a single badly judged pass can damage what has taken decades to grow.

Diving with an authorised centre is not just the most convenient option, it is the most advisable in a protected area with its own regulations: they know the buoyage, the areas where you can and cannot anchor, and the park’s rules. In fact, the conservation of this environment relies to a large extent on collaboration between the authorities, fishermen and the dive centres themselves, which over the years have taken part in campaigns to remove ghost nets and clean the seabed. When you dive with a serious centre, you become part of that chain of care rather than a problem for it.

And a common-sense recommendation: choose the early hours of the morning or the end of the afternoon. Not only for the light, which is prettier, but because in high season those time slots are less crowded and the experience is calmer.

Snorkelling: the alternative without a tank

Not everyone wants—or is able—to strap a tank to their back, and you don’t need one to peek into these seabeds. Snorkelling is the perfect gateway to El Albir’s underwater world, and in many cases it is enough to bring back images you weren’t expecting.

The coves of the Serra Gelada and the shallow rocky areas let you see posidonia, salema porgy, damselfish and, with luck and patience, an octopus, with no more equipment than a mask, a snorkel and fins. It is an ideal plan for the family, for days when the sea is like a millpond, and for anyone who wants to try before taking the step up to scuba diving. You will find all the sea activities gathered on the page about water activities in El Albir, and if you like outdoor activities in general, more ideas in the guide to sports near El Albir.

The difference from diving is obvious: from the surface you see the seabed from above, whereas with a tank you get inside the landscape, explore the walls and caves and go down to where the light changes. But as a first date with the El Albir sea, snorkelling is hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions about diving in El Albir

Do I need to know how to swim to dive? For a taster dive you need a minimum of comfort in the water and not to be panicked by it, but you don’t have to be an expert swimmer. For certification courses you are required to demonstrate a certain basic swimming ability. Mention it to the centre and they will advise you according to your case.

Is there a minimum age? Scuba diving has minimum ages depending on the certification (usually from 8 or 10 years old for children’s programmes, and 10 years old for the junior diver at many agencies). For snorkelling there is no limit other than common sense and adult supervision. Always confirm the specific ages with the centre.

Can I dive if I wear glasses? Yes. If you are prone to seasickness, take suitable medication in advance and sit in the central part of the boat.

Can I dive on the same day I fly? No. A safety interval must be observed between the last dive and flying (generally between 12 and 24 hours depending on the number of dives). A marine natural park with healthy posidonia meadows, rock walls with gorgonians, islets full of life and even dolphins crossing the bay, all just minutes from the beach and with a long-established dive centre right on the sand that takes care of the logistics for you. It is not a tropical diving destination, and it doesn’t pretend to be: it is the real Mediterranean, protected and surprisingly alive for where it is.

Whether you fancy a taster dive to discover the sensation of breathing underwater, or you already hold your certification and want to explore the islets of the Serra Gelada, there is plenty here to enjoy. And if for now you would rather start with something easy, a mask and snorkel in any of the coves will already show you what it’s all about.

If you are organising your visit and want to fit diving in with the rest of your sea activities, go back to the hub for water activities in El Albir, where you have all the options for enjoying the Mediterranean here gathered together.
