In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, maps and documents show variants such as <em data-start=\"1352\" data-end=\"1370\">Caseta del Metge<\/em> or <em data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1393\">Platgeta del Metge<\/em>, referring to small stretches of coast linked to this owner.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"1520\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Traditional_Fishing_and_Early_Settlements\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1520\">Traditional Fishing and Early Settlemen<\/strong>ts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1585\">The Albir coastline still holds traces of very early occupation.<\/p><ul data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1961\"><li data-start=\"1586\" data-end=\"1724\">Nearby archaeological sites have turned up bronze fish hooks from the <strong data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"1674\">Second Iron Age,<\/strong> evidence of fishing activity in Iberian times.<\/li><li data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1961\">In 1325, the <strong data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1773\">Carta de Poblament de Benidorm<\/strong> records a large fixed fishing ground (\u201cpesquera\u201d) in the Albir area (Fenoll Mar\u00ed), right at the foot of the mountain, confirming intensive use of the coastline well into the Late Middle Ages.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"2277\">Although Cala del Metge isn&#8217;t mentioned directly in medieval texts, its location alongside historic fishing grounds suggests it was part of the small-scale fishing network that supported the community, just like other nearby spots such as <strong data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2276\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/liveinalbir.com\/en\/what-is-albir-beach-like-everything-you-need-to-know-before-you-go\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2274\">Playa del Albir<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"2284\" data-end=\"2325\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ochre_Mining_in_the_Serra_Gelada\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"2287\" data-end=\"2325\">Ochre Mining in the Serra Gelada<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"2326\" data-end=\"2485\">Very close to the cove lies <strong data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2383\">Cala de la Mina<\/strong>, where an important red ochre deposit was mined from the 19th century into the early 20th.<\/p><ul data-start=\"2486\" data-end=\"2710\"><li data-start=\"2486\" data-end=\"2619\">The remains of the <strong data-start=\"2514\" data-end=\"2534\">foreman&#8217;s house<\/strong> are still visible, along with the pillars that once carried the ore-laden wagons down to the sea.<\/li><li data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2710\">Some historians trace the origins of pigment extraction here to Phoenician and Roman times.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"3006\">The ore was loaded directly onto barges anchored just off the coast, making the cove part of a small-scale mining industry that left its mark on the landscape. Today, this site is referenced on routes such as the one to the <strong data-start=\"2934\" data-end=\"3005\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/liveinalbir.com\/el-albir\/faro-de-lalbir\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2936\" data-end=\"3003\">Faro de l&#8217;Albir<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"3013\" data-end=\"3047\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coastal_Defense_and_Piracy\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"3016\" data-end=\"3047\">Coastal Defense and Piracy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"3048\" data-end=\"3167\">The proximity of <strong data-start=\"3068\" data-end=\"3086\">Punta Bombarda<\/strong> gave the area a strategic role against attacks by Barbary pirates.<\/p><ul data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3331\"><li data-start=\"3168\" data-end=\"3237\">In the 16th century, the <strong data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3217\">Torre Bombarda<\/strong> watchtower was built.<\/li><li data-start=\"3238\" data-end=\"3331\">In 1863, the <strong data-start=\"3283\" data-end=\"3301\">Faro del Albir<\/strong> was built on its ruins, and it still watches over the bay today.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3333\" data-end=\"3632\">The cove thus became part of a maritime surveillance network that protected the coast from raids and smuggling, a network that also includes other historic sites such as the <strong data-start=\"3513\" data-end=\"3631\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/liveinalbir.com\/en\/villa-romana-del-albir-history-visit-tips-what-to-see-near-the-beach\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3515\" data-end=\"3629\">Villa Romana de l&#8217;Albir<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"3639\" data-end=\"3692\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Local_Landmarks_From_the_Doctor_to_the_Fisherman\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"3642\" data-end=\"3692\">Local Landmarks: From the Doctor to the Fisherman<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"3693\" data-end=\"4070\">In the 20th century, in addition to the historic doctor&#8217;s house, the area also had a small <strong data-start=\"3777\" data-end=\"3802\">&#8220;fisherman&#8217;s hut&#8221;<\/strong> built in the 1960s on the cliffside. It served as shelter and storage for a local fisherman, but was deemed illegal within the natural park and ordered demolished in 2015. Today it remains abandoned, a testament to a past of modest, functional uses.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"4077\" data-end=\"4110\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Old_Access_Routes_and_Paths\"><\/span><strong data-start=\"4080\" data-end=\"4110\">Old Access Routes and Paths<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2><p data-start=\"4111\" data-end=\"4447\">Traditionally, Cala del Metge could only be reached by sea or by climbing down from the mountain.
