It was a time of transition in which the nobility adapted its power to the new order, and in which a key figure emerged for understanding the history of the territory: Beatriz Fajardo de Mendoza.  A baroness with vision  Beatriz Fajardo de Mendoza, born in 1619, was a highly influential noblewoman who inherited the lordships of Montealegre, Polop, and Benidorm in 1643, after the death of her brothers. Her intelligence, reforming character, and administrative skill made her one of the driving forces behind the region&#8217;s agricultural and institutional development.  The Reg Major de l&#8217;Alf\u00e0s: a hydraulic revolution  One of her most notable achievements was the creation, in 1666, of the Reg Major de l&#8217;Alf\u00e0s, a network of irrigation channels designed to carry water from the Ponoig ravine to the fields of Polop, La Nuc\u00eda, l&#8217;Alf\u00e0s del Pi, and Benidorm. This project radically transformed the landscape, making it possible to grow citrus, grapevines, almonds, and vegetables in areas that had previously been dry farmland. It&#8217;s estimated that more than 1,200 hectares benefited from this irrigation system.  Benidorm rises again: a new town charter  That same year, Beatriz granted Benidorm a new town charter (Carta Puebla), restoring the municipal autonomy it had lost when it was absorbed into the Lordship of Polop. This move drew new settlers and revived a town that had been on the verge of abandonment after the wars and epidemics of the previous century. Mild winters (averaging 17\u00b0C), clear skies on more than 300 days a year, and the nearby Alicante-Elche International Airport (opened in 1967) turned the area into a magnet for visitors from northern Europe, especially Norwegians, British, and Dutch.  What had once been farmland crossed by dirt tracks and citrus terraces gradually became a residential destination. Holiday homes, small family-run hotels, shops geared toward foreign visitors, and infrastructure built for international comfort all sprang up. El Albir&#8217;s approach to development favored low-density building and a relaxed way of life, in contrast to the mass tourism that took hold in Benidorm.  Gradual as it was, this shift laid the foundation for the modern El Albir: a cosmopolitan hub with high-quality services, careful urban planning, and an identity that blends the local with the European.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-8\" href=\"https:\/\/liveinalbir.com\/en\/villa-romana-del-albir-history-visit-tips-what-to-see-near-the-beach\/#El_Albir_today_whats_left_of_it_all_Ive_lived_here_since_2007_and_what_surprises_me_most_is_how_much_of_the_past_is_still_visible_if_you_know_where_to_look_The_citrus_terraces_you_see_climbing_toward_lAlfas_are_the_very_same_ones_once_watered_by_Beatriz_Fajardos_Reg_Major_The_line_of_some_of_the_old_irrigation_channels_is_still_there_And_the_Roman_site_sits_literally_a_couple_of_streets_from_the_beach_tucked_between_buildings_El_Albirs_growth_took_a_different_path_from_its_neighbors_slower_lower_density_built_around_Avenida_de_las_Palmeras_rather_than_a_row_of_beachfront_towers_Thats_what_explains_the_atmosphere_you_find_here_today_%E2%80%94_quiet_with_an_international_community_that_in_many_cases_lives_here_year-round_rather_than_just_passing_through_%E2%80%94_and_its_also_why_this_isnt_a_cheap_place_to_be_Its_not_a_spectacular_town_Its_a_comfortable_one_with_the_Serra_Gelada_Natural_Park_starting_where_the_last_street_ends_and_two_thousand_years_of_layered_history_right_underfoot\" >El Albir today: what&#8217;s left of it all  I&#8217;ve lived here since 2007, and what surprises me most is how much of the past is still visible if you know where to look. The citrus terraces you see climbing toward l&#8217;Alf\u00e0s are the very same ones once watered by Beatriz Fajardo&#8217;s Reg Major. The line of some of the old irrigation channels is still there. And the Roman site sits literally a couple of streets from the beach, tucked between buildings.  El Albir&#8217;s growth took a different path from its neighbors&#8217;: slower, lower density, built around Avenida de las Palmeras rather than a row of beachfront towers. That&#8217;s what explains the atmosphere you find here today \u2014 quiet, with an international community that in many cases lives here year-round rather than just passing through \u2014 and it&#8217;s also why this isn&#8217;t a cheap place to be.  It&#8217;s not a spectacular town. The most recent excavations, however, have reinterpreted much of its structure as a Roman fortification from the late Republican period.<\/li><li class=\"font-claude-response-body whitespace-normal break-words pl-2\" data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:206;1110-1315\">La Serreta (Alcoy): an oppidum (fortified city) with strong cultural ties to the Greeks and Carthaginians, evidence of the Iberians&#8217; contact with advanced Mediterranean civilizations.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" dir=\"ltr\" data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:355;1317-1671\">The Iberians built their settlements on high ground, close to the sea or trade routes, and their economy relied on farming, livestock, trade, and metalworking.
