There isn’t a major marathon of its own starting and finishing in El Albir, but there are important races that pass through here or directly affect local life, such as the Costa Blanca Miles, the 10K l’Alfàs del Pi, and the Costa Blanca Bike Race.

In this guide I organize it as it’s really experienced from here: by areas, by type of sport and by important events of the year.

Where to do sports in El Albir

The Walk of Fame: running, walking and cycling by the sea

The Paseo de las Estrellas (Walk of Stars) is the most convenient sports route in Albir. It’s flat, located next to Racó de l’Albir Beach, and allows you to run, walk, or cycle without too much difficulty.

Early in the morning, you’ll find it bustling with people walking, jogging, leisurely cyclists, and locals who use the promenade as part of their daily routine. The atmosphere changes at dusk: more strollers, more families, and more tourists, but it remains a perfect area to get around without a car.

Here you can do three very simple things.

Running or walking along the seafront is the easiest option if you’re visiting and unfamiliar with the area. You don’t need a map, you don’t need a complicated route, and you always have clear landmarks.

Cycling on flat terrain. The promenade and nearby connections make it easy to get around by bike, especially if you’re looking for something gentle or family-friendly.

Train outdoors. Near the beach, there are areas for mobility, light strength training, and functional training. They’re not a substitute for a full gym, but they’re more than enough to keep you active.

Local tip : If you want a proper workout, come early. In summer, from mid-morning onwards, between the heat, people, and other walkers, the promenade becomes less comfortable for running.

Racó de l’Albir Beach: swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and paddle surfing

Racó de l’Albir beach is pebbly, not sandy. This has its downsides: entering the water can be more uncomfortable if you’re barefoot, but the water is usually cleaner than on many sandy beaches.

The beach has retained its Blue Flag award for 2026, a distinction that recognizes water quality, safety, services, and environmental management. For those who want to enjoy water sports, this matters: swimming just anywhere is not the same as swimming on a supervised beach with services during peak season.

Many people use the beach as a natural swimming pool. Early morning, when the sea is calmer and there are fewer bathers, is the best time to train. You can swim parallel to the shore, do short laps, or simply combine swimming with movement.

For snorkeling, El Albir is much more interesting than it might seem from the outside. The rocky areas and coves near Serra Gelada offer more vibrant marine life than a typical sandy beach. If you bring a mask, snorkel, and booties, you can see fish, rocks, seagrass meadows, and some truly beautiful spots without having to take a boat.

For kayaking and paddleboarding, rentals are usually available near the beach during the season. It’s one of the most interesting activities because the Serra Gelada is completely transformed from the water: the cliffs, Punta Bombarda, and the coves are much more easily appreciated from the sea.

Local tip : wear water shoes. Seriously. The beach is beautiful, but the rocks are unforgiving.

Lifeguarding and beach services in summer

During the summer season, Racó de l’Albir Beach has lifeguard and rescue services. In 2026, the municipal service began on June 1st and continues until the end of September.

The announced schedule for 2026 is from 11:00 to 18:00 in June and September, and from 10:00 to 19:00 during July and August.

The accessible bathing area is also activated during the season, and from mid-June onwards services such as kayak, skate and paddle surf board rentals are usually available.

This doesn’t mean you can let your guard down. The sea is in charge. If the sea is rough, the flag is challenging, or visibility is poor, it’s best to leave snorkeling, kayaking, or long swims for another day.

The Albir Lighthouse Trail: Hiking, running and cycling with a sense of responsibility

The route to the Albir Lighthouse is the area’s classic sporting route. It’s an asphalt road of about 2.5 km each way, with a gentle slope, viewpoints, and direct views of the Mediterranean, Altea, the bay, and the cliffs of Serra Gelada.

The Lighthouse Trail has been part of the Blue Trails Network since 2013 and in 2026 received a special mention from ADEAC for achieving the highest possible score in the Blue Trails program. Furthermore, in 2025 it recorded an estimated 314,000 visitors.

It’s an easy route for walking, great for gentle running, and perfect for those who want to exercise without tackling a technical mountain trail. It’s also one of the most accessible routes in the area, although it has one clear drawback in summer: little shade.

Here you can do various types of training.

Walking to the Lighthouse. It’s the most popular and safest option for visitors.

Running on a gentle uphill slope. Ideal if you want to incorporate some elevation gain without tackling challenging mountain terrain.

Combine a walk + Lighthouse. A very complete routine would be to start at the Walk of Stars, go to the start of the route and go up to the Lighthouse.

Cycling is only allowed in accordance with regulations. There are time restrictions for bicycles and scooters in the park area, so it’s advisable to check the current rules before heading out.

Local tip : Don’t go up at midday in summer. It’s not heroic, it’s a bad idea. Bring water, a hat, and go early or late.

Serra Gelada and the coves of Albir: the wildest side of local sport

The Serra Gelada mountain range is what makes Albir more than just a beach area. Here you’ll find cliffs, trails, rocky coves, viewpoints, and a natural environment that allows you to enjoy sports with a much wilder feel.

The nearby coves, such as Cala del Metge or the area of the old ochre mine, are good for snorkeling and calm swimming when the sea is calm. These aren’t comfortable beaches with sun loungers and beach bars: they are rocky areas with clear water and more difficult access.

For more demanding hikes, the Serra Gelada also connects with more challenging routes towards Benidorm, although that’s no longer the easy stroll from the lighthouse. Appropriate footwear, water, and common sense are essential.

Local tip : For snorkeling, calm seas are best. If there are waves, visibility decreases and the risk increases.

Calisthenics and outdoor strength training

Albir also offers opportunities for strength training without a gym. Near the beach and in public areas, you can find spaces for pull-ups, dips, mobility exercises, abdominal exercises, and functional training.

The advantage is clear: you train outdoors, with sea views, and it’s free. The disadvantage is equally clear: in summer it’s hot, there are more people, and you won’t always have a free space.

A simple routine could be this:

Warm-up by walking along the promenade.

Strength training on bars or exercise area.

A swim at the beach to recover.

Gentle stretches facing the sea.

It’s not professional training, but it works very well for staying in shape while living or spending a few days in El Albir.

Cycling in El Albir: rides, Altea, Benidorm and rural paths

For leisurely cycling, El Albir works very well. You can ride along the promenade, connect to Altea, or explore more inland routes towards l’Alfàs del Pi. It’s not all perfect bike paths, and there are areas where you need to be careful, but for easy cycle touring, the area offers plenty of options.

If you’re looking for road cycling or more serious training, the Marina Baixa area is a great option. From here you have routes to Altea, La Nucía, Polop, Guadalest, Finestrat, or Benidorm. That’s a whole different level: more elevation gain, more traffic in some sections, and a greater need for planning.

For family outings, the coast. For serious training, inland.

Major sporting events in El Albir and l’Alfàs del Pi

Here’s the part that many guidebooks skip over. Albir isn’t just for training: it’s also part of important sporting events in the area.

And let’s be clear: Albir doesn’t have its own major annual marathon. Nor is there a regular local half marathon starting and finishing in Albir. But there are sporting events that affect the town, the promenade, the lighthouse, and the Serra Gelada area.

The most important ones are X Millas Costa Blanca, the 10K l’Alfàs del Pi and the Costa Blanca Bike Race.

X Miles Costa Blanca: the race that does go through El Albir

The Costa Blanca Miles X is the most important event for understanding local sport in El Albir. It’s not just a simple fun run through the town: it connects l’Alfàs del Pi with El Albir, passes by the Walk of Fame, and climbs up to the lighthouse.

The longer route is about 10 miles (approximately 16 km) and combines the town center, coastline, seafront promenade, and Serra Gelada mountain range. There is also a shorter route, V Miles, designed for those seeking a less demanding option.

The route starts from the sports center of l’Alfàs del Pi, crosses areas of the town center, goes down towards El Albir, enters through the Boulevard of Musicians, goes along the Walk of Stars, connects with the Camí Vell del Far and goes up to the Albir Lighthouse.

Simply put: on X Miles day, you don’t just go for a run along the promenade like any other Sunday. On that day, El Albir becomes part of the route.

This is a big deal for both visitors and residents. There may be road closures, changes in traffic flow, disruption to access to the lighthouse, and alterations to the usual Sunday routine. In some years, the Sunday market in l’Albir has also been canceled or affected by the race.

My local advice : if you’re coming that day, enjoy it as an event. But if you were planning to climb to the lighthouse at your leisure, park near the promenade, or drive around the area, check the road closures and schedules beforehand.

V Miles Costa Blanca: the short version of the race

The V Miles Costa Blanca is the little sister of the X Miles. It shares some of the atmosphere and the route, but avoids the most demanding part of the complete climb to the Lighthouse.

It’s a good option for recreational runners who want to experience the race without taking on a more challenging event. It also makes the event more accessible and not reserved solely for highly trained runners.

For Albir, its importance lies in the fact that it forms part of the same sporting event. Although it is shorter, the atmosphere, the changes in the course, and the movement of participants are equally noticeable in the area.

10K l’Alfàs del Pi: popular race near Albir

The 10K l’Alfàs del Pi is another important event within the municipal sports calendar, although it has less direct impact on the seafront and Albir beach.

It is part of the Marina Baixa Walking Circuit, along with other popular races in the region. In 2026, the event in l’Alfàs del Pi is scheduled for the end of November, with a distance of 10 km.

The difference with X Miles is clear: the 10K takes place further up, in the town center of l’Alfàs and its surroundings. If you’re staying in El Albir, you’ll probably notice it much less than with X Miles. It’s not the race that blocks your walk or the climb up to the lighthouse.

Even so, it deserves to be included in this guide because it is part of the municipality’s actual sporting calendar and may be of interest to runners who live in El Albir or who want to compete without leaving the Marina Baixa region.

Costa Blanca Bike Race: International MTB race near Serra Gelada

The Costa Blanca Bike Race is the most professional event in this group. It’s a multi-stage mountain bike race with international participation and UCI status.

Although its center is not exclusively El Albir, some editions have directly touched on Serra Gelada and the Altea-l’Alfàs area. In 2016, the event appeared on the UCI calendar as the Costa Blanca Bike Race – XCMS, held from January 29 to February 1.

For a local guide, this matters for a very simple reason: when the Bike Race comes in, the sensitive site is not the beach; it’s Serra Gelada.

If your trip coincides with a stage or activity in the Serra Gelada area, it’s best to avoid the climb to the lighthouse or the access roads to the natural park during that time. It’s not the ideal day for an impromptu, leisurely hike in the mountains.

Mediterranean Coast Challenge: open waters between Altea and El Albir

The Mediterranean Coast Challenge was an open water swimming event linked to the area of Altea, l’Alfàs del Pi, El Albir and Serra Gelada.

It is interesting because it shows that this area has also had a tradition of open sea events, with routes between Altea and the Racó de l’Albir Beach.

But let’s be honest: it’s not advisable to promote it as a current annual event if there isn’t a recent confirmed date. It can be mentioned as an important sporting precedent, but not as a fixed event on the current calendar.

To put it simply: if it returns, it will be fantastic news for open water swimmers. But until there’s an official announcement, it’s best to treat it as a historic event or one that’s still pending confirmation.

Other nearby sporting events in the Marina Baixa

Although they are not from El Albir, there are nearby races that may be of great interest to those who live here or come to train.

Benidorm Half: half marathon and 10K in Benidorm, very close to Albir.

Costa Blanca Trails in Finestrat: powerful mountain race in the Marina Baixa.

Cycling events and mountain bike rides in the region: some have irregular continuity, so it’s advisable to check the calendar every year.

Popular races of the Circuit a Peu Marina Baixa: 8, 9 and 10 km options in different nearby towns.

This block is important because it positions El Albir as a sports base, not as an isolated place. You can sleep or live here and compete in Benidorm, Finestrat, Altea, La Nucía, Polop, or Callosa.

Indicative sports calendar in El Albir and surrounding areas

January:
Costa Blanca Bike Race, if the edition returns to Serra Gelada or the Altea-l’Alfàs area.

March or April:
X Miles Costa Blanca and V Miles. It is the event that most affects the promenade, the Lighthouse and the sports mobility of Albir.

May or June:
Possible open water trials, only if there is a confirmed call for entries.

Summer:
Kayaking, paddle surfing, swimming, snorkeling, and gentle sports early in the morning. At this time of year, the heat is king.

September and October:
A good time to get back to running and cycling without the extreme summer heat.

November:
10K l’Alfàs del Pi and nearby races such as Benidorm Half.

A full day of sport in El Albir

If you’re looking to get moving, I’d do something like this.

Early morning: a stroll or gentle run along the Walk of Fame.

Afterwards: walk or run up to the Albir Lighthouse.

Mid-morning: swim at Racó de l’Albir Beach.

If the sea is calm: snorkel near the rocky areas.

In the afternoon: gentle cycling towards Altea or outdoor strength training.

And if it coincides with an event like X Miles, it’s best to change your mindset: instead of trying to do your normal routine, experience the race, take in the atmosphere, and leave the training for another time.

Practical tips before doing sports in El Albir

In summer, avoid the middle of the day.

Bring water even for the Lighthouse route.

Wear water shoes for the beach, snorkeling, and coves.

Check sea conditions before swimming or kayaking.

If there is a sporting event, check court closures and schedules.

For cyclists, exercise extreme caution at intersections and access points.

Don’t underestimate the Serra Gelada: it looks friendly, but the heat is intense.

If you’re going to run along the promenade, it’s best to do it early in the morning or at sunset.

If you go to the Lighthouse, remember that there is little shade.

If you’re going snorkeling, don’t push yourself in rough seas.

Free sports in El Albir

One of the best things about doing sports in El Albir is that many options are free.

You can walk along the promenade, run by the sea, climb to the lighthouse, swim at the beach, snorkel with your own equipment, do outdoor strength training, or go cycling in nearby areas.

Plans that usually have a cost include kayaking, paddle surfing, some organized activities, popular races, or equipment rental.

Even so, compared to other destinations, El Albir allows you to stay active without depending on gyms, private clubs or large facilities.

Frequently asked questions about sports in El Albir

What is the best place to run in El Albir?

The Paseo de las Estrellas is the most comfortable option for a flat run. If you want something more challenging, you can combine it with the climb to the Albir Lighthouse.

Is there a marathon in El Albir?

There isn’t a major annual marathon of its own starting and finishing in El Albir. The most important local race for runners is the Costa Blanca Miles, about 16 km, and nearby you have events like the Benidorm Half.

Which race passes by the Albir Lighthouse?

The Costa Blanca X Miles is the race most closely linked to the Lighthouse. Its route descends from l’Alfàs towards El Albir, passes by the Walk of Stars and climbs up to the Lighthouse.

Is it possible to swim at Albir Beach?

Yes. Racó de l’Albir Beach is very popular for swimming, especially early in the morning. There is lifeguard service during the summer.

Is it possible to snorkel in El Albir?

Yes. The rocky areas and coves near Serra Gelada are the most interesting. Best when the sea is calm and wearing water shoes.

Is it possible to kayak or paddle surf in El Albir?

Yes, during peak season you can usually rent kayaks, paddle boats, and paddleboards on the beach. It’s best to confirm availability and schedules before you go.

Is it possible to climb to the Lighthouse by bike?

There are time restrictions and rules for the natural park, so it’s advisable to check the current regulations before going up. Pedestrians always have priority.

What major cycling event passes near Albir?

The Costa Blanca Bike Race has included stages in the Altea-Serra Gelada area, with an impact on the natural park area.

What free sport can I do in El Albir?

Walking, running, swimming, climbing the lighthouse, snorkeling with your own equipment, outdoor strength training, or cycling in nearby areas. Kayaking, paddle surfing, and organized activities may incur a cost.

What is the best time to do sports in El Albir?

In summer, early morning or late afternoon are best. In winter and on weekdays, almost any time can be good, although the walk is usually more pleasant outside of peak hours.

Is the Albir Lighthouse route difficult?

No. It’s a paved, accessible route with a gentle slope. The difficult part isn’t the route itself, but doing it in high heat or without water.

Is Albir a good place to train if I’m on vacation?

Yes. That’s one of its strengths. You can maintain a simple routine without a car, without a gym, and without complicating things: a walk, the beach, the lighthouse, calisthenics, and gentle cycling.

My local opinion

Albir is a better sports destination than it seems. It doesn’t have the noise of Benidorm or the image of a large sports complex, but it has something very difficult to replicate: everything is close by.

You can run along the promenade, climb to the lighthouse, swim at a Blue Flag beach, snorkel in coves, cycle towards Altea and watch competitions that use the same landscape where you train on any given morning.

For me, that’s the beauty of it: Albir doesn’t need to pretend it’s a sports destination. It is, but in its own way.

It’s not the place for huge stadiums or massive events every weekend. It’s a place where sport blends with everyday life: walking at dawn, swimming before lunch, climbing the lighthouse as the sun sets, training by the sea, or signing up for a race that runs along the same promenade you stroll down every Sunday.

And that, for those who live here or come looking for something more than just beach and sun loungers, is worth a lot.

WHAT TO DO IN ALBIR | Where to start and where to finish

ROUTES AND EXCURSIONS FROM ALBIR | DISCOVER AND WALK

Cheap Hotels in Albir –
