But if you’ve been here for more than a day, sooner or later someone will mention the coves. And yes: they have something special.

Behind the seafront promenade, within the Serra Gelada Natural Park , lie three coves that many visitors discover only later: Cala del Amerador, Cala del Metge, and Cala de la Mina. These aren’t comfortable beaches with fine sand. They are rocky coves with clear water, tranquility, and difficult access.

I’ve lived in El Albir since 2007, and I don’t describe these coves as picture-perfect postcards; I describe them as they are. Beautiful, yes. Wild, also yes. Comfortable, not always. Every season I see people going down in flip-flops, without water, or even trying to get there with small children as if it were a city beach. This guide exists so that doesn’t happen to you.

Before going down to the coves of Albir

Before choosing a cove, keep this in mind: the coves of Albir are not a convenient extension of the seafront promenade. They are located within a protected natural environment, with narrow access points, loose stones, and sections where a misstep can ruin your day.

There are no lifeguards, showers, restrooms, beach bars, or trash cans. Bring everything back with you. And if you go in the summer, the heat is much more noticeable on the way down and, especially, on the way back up.

To come well prepared:

Wear closed shoes, lightweight hiking boots, or water shoes with good soles.

Don’t go down after heavy rain: the loose soil and rocks are more slippery.

Bring water, especially if you’re going to Cala de la Mina.

Avoid carrying umbrellas, large coolers, or beach gear.

If you’re traveling with small children, it’s best to stay on Albir Beach or just do the Albir Lighthouse Route .

If you can go by sea in a kayak or paddle surf, it is often the most comfortable option.

These coves are meant to be enjoyed with respect and common sense. data-end="3909">Cala del Amerador is the smallest of the three and also one of the most unusual. It’s barely 20 meters long and 7 meters wide, so don’t expect a spacious beach where you can spread out your towel, umbrella, and half your house.

It is located on the slopes of Morro del Metge, very close to the entrance of the Serra Gelada Natural Park, within the municipality of l’Alfàs del Pi. Its size is minimal, but the surroundings have a lot of character: rock, pebbles, clear water and that feeling of being a stone’s throw from urban Albir, but away from the noise.

The name also has a story. “Amerador” comes from the places where freshly cut esparto grass was traditionally soaked to soften it before being used to make ropes, baskets, or mats. In other words, this spot already had a purpose and a name long before anyone thought of coming here with snorkeling gear or posting a photo on Instagram.

How to get to Cala del Amerador

On foot, you can reach it from the area near the Natural Park parking lot. Before entering the lighthouse path, take the Passeig de l’Amerador towards the coast. The path down begins near the Mirador de las Sirenas viewpoint.

The problem isn’t the distance. The problem is the final stretch. It’s short, but it can be uneven, with loose stones and deteriorated areas. It’s not suitable for people with reduced mobility, strollers, or small children.

Going by sea is much more convenient. From Albir Beach , you can reach it in about 5-10 minutes by kayak or paddleboard if the sea is calm. It’s also possible to access it from the Altea area, although that depends on your exact starting point.

If you’re coming by car, it’s best to check the guide on where to park in El Albir beforehand, because in high season the park entrance area can fill up quickly.

What you’ll find at Amerador Cove

Cala del Amerador has no sand. The seabed is rocky and pebbly, so water shoes here aren’t just a luxury: they’re practically mandatory if you want to go in and out of the water without looking like a wounded flamingo.

The seabed is shallow and covered with Posidonia oceanica, making it an interesting cove for beginner snorkelers. It’s not the most spectacular of the three, but it’s a good first introduction to this stretch of coastline.

On the right wall there is a very photogenic geological fold, one of those that makes the landscape seem wilder than you would expect so close to the urban center.

For whom it is worthwhile

Cala del Amerador is worth a visit if you’re looking for a small, quiet cove that’s relatively close by. It’s perfect for a short trip, a refreshing swim, or a gentle kayak outing.

It’s not the best option if you want to spend the whole day lying down, if you’re carrying a lot of things, or if you’re looking for comfort. For that, it’s better to go back to the promenade and enjoy Albir Beach , which is there for a reason.

Cala del Metge (El Albir, Alicante): historia, leyendas y usos a lo largo de los siglos

Cala del Metge or Cala del Médico: the most well known

Cala del Metge , also known as Cala del Médico, is probably the most famous of Albir’s coves. It’s the one that appears most often on social media, the one most people mention when asking about “secret” coves, and one of the most beautiful if you catch it in good light.

It’s not actually one large cove, but rather several small inlets of gravel and pebbles separated by rocky outcrops. Together they add up to about 100-120 meters of coastline, although the usable area for sitting or leaving your backpack is considerably smaller.

The surroundings are completely natural: cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation, light rock, turquoise water and the feeling of being below the Serra Gelada, even though you are not yet too far from the start of the route.

One of its most recognizable features is the so-called Fisherman’s Hut, an abandoned 1960s structure that still stands as a strange relic of another era. There’s no need to romanticize it too much: it’s there, it’s part of the landscape, and it gives the cove a very distinctive character.

How to get to Cala del Metge

To reach it on foot, enter via the paved road of the Albir Lighthouse Route . About 200-300 meters from the entrance, an unmarked path appears to the left. You have to go around a fenced area and descend a steep section, with remains of an old staircase and uneven terrain.

Let’s be clear: the descent might seem manageable, but the climb is noticeable. And if you’re afraid of heights, lack agility, or are traveling with small children, it’s not the best idea.

Avoid going down to the beach after it rains. It’s also best to avoid days with strong winds or rough seas, because a beautiful cove can quickly become a bad idea if the sea is rough.

Cala del Metge is much more accessible by sea. It’s about 500 meters east of Albir Beach, so it can be reached relatively easily by kayak or paddleboard if the sea conditions are right.

What you’ll find at Cala del Metge

Cala del Metge has a bottom of gravel, pebbles, and rocks. The water is usually very clear when the sea is calm, with blue and turquoise tones that explain why this cove has become so popular.

It’s a great area for snorkeling, especially near the rocks. You can see small fish, seagrass meadows, clear waters, and interesting spots for easy underwater photography.

It’s also a cove with a naturist tradition. It’s not an “official” nudist beach in the urban sense, but it is a place where nudists and those who prefer to wear swimsuits generally coexist peacefully. The key is the same as always: respect, discretion, and not behaving like a tourist with binoculars on their head.

For whom it is worthwhile

Cala del Metge is good if you want a beautiful cove, with a quiet atmosphere, powerful scenery and a feeling of a hidden corner.

I don’t recommend it for families with young children or for people looking for comfort. Nor is it suitable for anyone wanting to spend many hours in the sun without moving: there’s little shade and the rock is unforgiving.

If you’re hiking to the lighthouse and want to add a wilder touch to your itinerary, this cove is a great fit. It’s not the most comfortable cove, but it’s one of those that best explains why the Serra Gelada is much more than just a pretty mountain in the background.

It is located at the foot of the Faralló de la Serra Gelada, protected by the Morro de la Llissera and the Barreta de les Mines. This natural shelter means that, on clear days, the water can be especially clear and calm.

The name comes from the area’s old ochre mines. The entrances to the galleries can still be seen in the cliffs, and the reddish hue that appears in parts of the landscape is no accident. Cala de la Mina is not just a cove for swimming: it’s also a piece of the Serra Gelada’s mining past.

How to get to Cala de la Mina

On foot, follow the Albir Lighthouse Route almost to the end. Shortly before reaching the lighthouse, you’ll see the cove to your left. The descent isn’t exactly a leisurely stroll: it’s an uneven path, steep in places, and with loose soil.

It’s not advisable to improvise here. If you’re unsure, don’t go down. You can perfectly enjoy the views from above and continue on to the Albir Lighthouse , which is worth the visit in itself.

By sea, Cala de la Mina offers a very different experience. From Albir Beach, it’s about 2 km by kayak, skirting the Serra Gelada. It’s a beautiful route, but don’t attempt it in rough seas or without at least some experience. The Mediterranean seems like a swimming pool until it doesn’t.

If you are not familiar with the area, also check the guide on how to get to El Albir and the public transport guide in El Albir if you are coming without a car.

What you will find at Cala de la Mina

Cala de la Mina has rocky seabeds, water ranging from dark blue to emerald, powerful cliffs, and a more interesting marine biodiversity than in the nearby coves.

It’s a great area for snorkeling if you’re experienced and the sea is calm. The seabed is teeming with fish like seabream, rocky areas, starfish, seagrass meadows, and other marine life associated with the protected environment. Don’t come expecting a tropical aquarium, but you will find a vibrant Mediterranean for those who know where to look.

It’s also a very photogenic cove. From the water, the cliffs of the Serra Gelada are much more imposing than from land. It’s one of those places where you realize that Albir is more than just a seafront promenade, hotels, and terraces.

For whom it is worthwhile

Cala de la Mina is worth visiting if you’re looking for nature, snorkeling, kayaking, scenery, and a wilder experience.

It’s not worth it if you’re short on time, have small children, don’t have suitable footwear, or don’t feel like making an effort. This cove isn’t best enjoyed by struggling with the path. It’s best enjoyed when you know what you’re getting into.

Cueva de la Mina: the mining past of the Serra Gelada

The Cave of the Mine, or Cova de la Mina, is not a tourist cave designed for those who want to enter with a flashlight and act like adventurers. It is the entrance to ancient galleries where red ochre, a natural pigment used for centuries in dyes, paints, and other crafts, was extracted.

From the lighthouse route, you can see the openings carved into the rock. That reddish hue that appears around Cala de la Mina comes precisely from this mining history.

The area has clear historical and scenic value, but it’s not equipped for indoor visits. Entering would be a bad idea due to the risk of collapses, lack of oxygen, and a complete lack of safety.

The view from the outside is worth it alone. There’s no need to go inside an unstable gallery to prove anything.

Snorkeling in the coves of Albir

If you’re looking to snorkel in El Albir, these coves are much more interesting than the central area of the beach. The combination of rocks, seagrass, irregular seabeds, and less human activity makes the water more vibrant, especially on calm days.

For easy snorkeling, Cala del Amerador is the most pleasant. For something more visually appealing and photogenic, try Cala del Metge. For a wilder experience, head to Cala de la Mina.

Basic tips:

Enter slowly: the stones are slippery.

Wear booties.

Don’t step on the posidonia.

Do not remove animals, shells, rocks or debris from the bottom.

Don’t go alone if you don’t know the area.

If there are waves, leave the snorkeling for another day.

The sea here may look calm from above, but between rocks, gentle currents and awkward access, it’s best not to be too brave.

Kayaking and paddle surfing towards the coves

One of the best ways to explore the coves of Albir is from the sea. By kayak or paddleboard, the coastline is completely transformed. You see the cliffs from below, gain a better understanding of the shape of the Serra Gelada mountain range, and avoid some awkward descents.

From Albir Beach:

Cala del Amerador: Approximately 5-10 minutes.

Cala del Metge: about 500 meters.

Cala de la Mina: about 2 km along the coast.

The route to Cala de la Mina is the most beautiful, but also the one that demands the most respect. Don’t attempt it if there’s wind, a swell, or if you lack experience. And if you’re using a paddleboard, be even more careful: moving forward seems easy until you have to return against the wind.

For a complete nature plan, you can combine this area with the guide to routes and excursions near El Albir .

Is nudism allowed in the coves of Albir?

Yes, these coves have a naturist tradition, especially Cala del Metge and some more secluded areas. They aren’t urban beaches with amenities or designated areas, but rather natural coves where nudists and non-nudists often coexist peacefully.

The real rule is simple: respect. Don’t stare, don’t take photos of anyone, don’t invade personal space, and don’t cause a scene. Here, everyone is going to enjoy the sea in their own way.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly, comfortable, and more traditional atmosphere, Albir Beach is a better option. If you prefer a more secluded and natural setting, the coves are a better fit.

Regulations for visiting the coves of Albir

The coves of Albir are part of the natural environment of the Serra Gelada. They are not urban beaches, and that is evident in everything: access, services, conservation, and regulations.

You can’t come here as if you were just visiting any old beach. What you bring up, you bring down with you. What you find, stays where it is. And if an area is protected, it must be respected even if no one is looking.

Basic rules:

Do not uproot plants or disturb wildlife.

Do not remove stones, fossils, minerals or natural remains.

Do not enter galleries, caves or unstable areas.

Don’t make a fire.

Don’t throw away cigarette butts.

Don’t leave trash.

Do not use speakers.

Keep the dogs on leashes.

Do not anchor on posidonia.

Use eco-friendly buoys if you are traveling by boat and they are available.

Do not travel outside of designated trails.

Please respect the restrictions on bicycles and scooters on the Lighthouse Route.

The Serra Gelada seems resilient because it’s enormous, but coastal ecosystems are delicate. A cigarette butt, a torn-up stone, a trampled plant, or an anchor on seagrass seem insignificant until hundreds of people do it.

Which is the best cove in Albir?

It depends on what you’re looking for.

If you want the closest and smallest one, choose Cala del Amerador.
If you want the most well-known and photogenic one, choose Cala del Metge.
If you want the wildest and most marine, choose Cala de la Mina.

My local advice: if it’s your first time, don’t start with the most difficult one. Consider the sea, the heat, your footwear, and make a sensible decision. The coves aren’t going anywhere. You can always come back another day.

For many people, the perfect plan is this: a walk along the Lighthouse Route, a view of the coves from above, a swim at Albir Beach, and lunch afterwards at one of the restaurants in Albir . More comfortable, more complete, and less of a budget-friendly, epic experience.

Recommended plan to see the coves of Albir in one morning

If you want to explore the area without any hassle, you can organize it like this:

First, arrive early and park near the entrance to the Natural Park. In summer, the later you arrive, the more time you’ll spend circling the area. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, check the guide to parking in El Albir beforehand.

Next, start by walking along the Lighthouse Route. It’s an easy, paved path with spectacular views. From there, you can easily see where Cala del Metge and Cala de la Mina are located without having to descend haphazardly.

If the weather is nice and you’re prepared, you can head first to Cala del Amerador or consider going down to Cala del Metge. If you’re not sure, don’t go down. It’s perfectly fine. The route to the lighthouse is already one of the best things to do in El Albir.

Afterwards, head back to the seafront promenade, take a dip at Albir Beach, and finish off with breakfast, lunch, or coffee. For suggestions, you can consult our guide on where to have a good breakfast in Albir , where to eat cheaply in Albir, or our top selection of restaurants in Albir .

That’s a perfect day. Cala de la Mina is almost at the end of the route to the Albir Lighthouse.

Are the coves of Albir dangerous?

They’re not dangerous if you’re prepared and use common sense, but access can be tricky. There are steep sections, loose stones, deteriorated areas, and a risk of slipping. After rain or rough seas, it’s best not to go down.

Are they suitable for children?

They are not recommended for young children. For families, Albir Beach is much more comfortable and safe. If the children are older, used to walking, and you are well-equipped, you could consider some easy areas, but don’t improvise.

Do they have a lifeguard or other services?

No. The coves of Albir do not have lifeguards, showers, toilets, trash cans, sunbeds, or beach bars. They are natural coves within the Serra Gelada area.

Which is the easiest cove in Albir?

Cala del Amerador is usually the closest and quickest to visit, although the final access can also be uneven. For practical reasons, access by sea is generally better than walking down.

Which is the most beautiful cove in Albir?

Cala del Metge is usually the most photogenic and well-known. Cala de la Mina, on the other hand, has a wilder setting and is better for snorkeling and kayaking.

Is snorkeling possible?

Yes. All three coves are good for snorkeling if the sea is calm. Cala del Amerador is easier, Cala del Metge is very scenic, and Cala de la Mina is usually the most interesting for those looking for rocky seabeds and biodiversity.

Is it possible to go kayaking?

Yes. In fact, kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the coves of Albir. From Albir Beach, you can quickly reach Amerador and Metge. Cala de la Mina is further away and requires better physical condition and calm seas.

Is nudism allowed?

Yes, there is a naturist tradition in these coves, especially in the more secluded ones. Coexistence between nudists and those who prefer to wear swimsuits is usually peaceful, always with respect.

Where to park to visit the coves?

The usual places to park are near the entrance to the Serra Gelada Natural Park or in areas near Albir. During peak season, it’s best to arrive early. You can consult the complete parking guide for Albir .

What is the best time to visit the coves?

Spring and autumn are the best times: less heat, fewer people, and good light. In summer the water is more pleasant, but access can be difficult due to the heat. In winter they are perfect for walking and enjoying the scenery, although not always for swimming.

Are the coves of Albir worth visiting?

Yes, if you’re looking for nature, clear water, rocky shores, snorkeling, and peaceful spots. No, if you’re looking for comfort, amenities, and fine sand. The coves of Albir are beautiful, but they’re not for everyone. And that’s precisely why they retain their charm.

CONCLUSION

The coves of Albir aren’t for everyone. And that, frankly, is part of their charm.

If you want fine sand, showers, a promenade, and a terrace just two minutes away, it’s best to go back to the main guide for Albir Beach . There you’ll find the convenient, family-friendly, and easy option for swimming without any hassle.

If you want rocks, silence, clear water and a touch of adventure, then yes: Cala del Amerador, Cala del Metge and Cala de la Mina are well worth it.

Just come prepared. Don’t go down there as if you were going to a city beach. Respect the environment, look carefully at the sea, and don’t leave anything behind.

The Serra Gelada offers some of the most beautiful corners of El Albir , but it does not forgive those who come overconfident.

WHERE TO PARK IN EL ALBIR | Free parking, best areas and tips based on your plan

WHAT TO DO IN ALBIR | Where to start and where to finish

HOW TO GET TO EL ALBIR? ▷ COMPLETE TRAVEL GUIDE

WHAT IS ALBIR BEACH LIKE?
